My Little Martini

Inspired by the New York Times, I decided to hold my own little taste test. According to the Times’ spirits critic, many bottom-shelf gins are better than my beloved Bombay Sapphire. Maybe I was wooed by all the shiny shiny ads in the shiny shiny magazines or maybe by the fact that Sapphire is 50% pure alcohol. Well, you can’t believe everything you read in the newspapers these days. So I plunked down a couple of yuppie food stamps and restocked my bar (at least the gin section) -
Day One: Seagram’s Extra Dry Gin ($12 at the liquor sto’ by by subway)
4-to-1 Seagram’s to Noilly-Prat makes a damn good Martini. Shaken for a minute with 3 ice cubes, a Seagram’s Martini is smooth, dry and without any nasty aftertaste. Moreover, there’s no alcoholic heat mucking things up. I highly recommend it. It’s a good sipping drink, perfect for finishing off the day. I paired it with a 8 oz. fillet of tilapia and some blanched green beans for a satisfying dinner that, factoring in the cost of the alcohol, almost costing $10. Well, New York Times… you win this round. But will see how accurate you are tomorrow, when I try a Gordon’s London Dry Martini.
